The SI unit of pressure is the Pascal (Pa). It is named after the French mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal. One Pascal is defined as one newton per square meter (N/m²).
Pressure is a measure of the force exerted on a surface area, perpendicular to that surface. It is calculated by dividing the force applied on an object by the area over which the force acts. Therefore, pressure is a scalar quantity, measured in units of force divided by area.
The Pascal is commonly used for scientific and engineering purposes. However, in practical situations, other units of pressure are also frequently used, such as pounds per square inch (psi) or atmospheres (atm). Other common units include millibar (mbar), torr, and kilopascal (kPa).
Pressure can be measured using various devices, such as manometers, pressure gauges, or even by calculating the pressure difference based on fluid height in a column (as in barometers). These devices convert the pressure into physical measurements that can be read or displayed.
